Welcome

Subtext - making words come alive in the community

Subtext used to engage East London’s young people and health service users through the written and spoken word. Subtext was passionate about creating opportunities, skills and a platform for new voices.

Subtext's final project was a scriptwriting programme with Subtext Young Writers Group and Centrepoint. Called City Sites it built on the success of previous work with these groups. Inspired by Joe Penhall's play Wild Turkey, which is set in a cafe-burger bar, the young participants chose a location familiar to them (kebab shop, park, bus stop) to likewise trigger their imaginations and create original characters and worlds in their own scripts.

OHTER RECENT EVENTS
Using Creative Arts in Mental Health Settings: these were one-day workshops providing practical skills based training and development for artists and other practitioners, who wanted to consider the benefit of using the creative arts in mental health settings, introducing techniques to enhance communication styles, generate ideas and share examples of good practice.

SUBTEXT HAS NOW CLOSED

The reason for the closure was that Subtext no longer had sufficient funding to keep the organisation going. Subtext's primary funding source had been from Arts Council England (ACE), but when this funding was stopped. the organisation was unable to secure alternative funding, and without this its future was unsustainable.

In the light of this, Subtext's trustees reluctantly concluded that the only option was for the Company to cease trading, and to do so while the company still had sufficient funds to meet all its liabilities. Trustees believed this was the only responsible course of action: not to do so could have risked the company not meeting its liabilities and trading while insolvent.

We say a BIG THANK YOU to everyone who has been involved with the organisation over the years: participants, supporters, funders, artists and facilitators.

From us all at Subtext
