Subtext was established in 1976 as a co-operative bookshop and arts project under the name of Tower Hamlets Arts Project (THAP). In 1980 we moved to Whitechapel Road and in 1992 changed our name to Eastside Arts. In 2004 we forged a new identity as Subtext and moved to our current offices in Bethnal Green.
We have always been a community-focussed organisation, mixing literature with different art forms (particularly film) in our innovative projects.
Subtext closed on 25 September 2008.
