Arts and Mental Health Workshops

USING THE WRITTEN & SPOKEN WORD: MENTAL HEALTH & CREATIVE ARTS

A practical, skills based, one day training & development workshop for creative writers, poets & performance artists wanting to work, or currently working in the mental health arena. The workshop will consider the benefits of using creative arts in mental health settings, introduce techniques to enhance communication styles, generate ideas for exercises and share examples of good practice.

Dates of next workshop:
Wednesday, 18th June 2008

The workshop aims to promote understanding & stimulate ideas, through small group work exercises and discussion. Artists will be able to develop existing facilitation skills and consider new styles of working. The day will consist of:
• Structured information giving and sharing, with points to consider when setting up and facilitating workshops in mental health settings
• Structured training experiences to adequately prepare artists to work in the mental health environment
• An overview of mental health- facts & fiction
• Participatory exercises and games
• Networking opportunities and ongoing support

We believe that each artist brings something unique to the workshop setting & has an individual style of working. The aim of this event is not to be prescriptive or to give you a “how to” list. Rather, this one-day training & development event encourages best practice to help you make your own workshops high quality and fun.

At the end of the workshop, you will be given the opportunity to sign up for ongoing action learning sets, or 1:1 coaching (charged separately). There will also be an opportunity to be added to the Subtext database of artists, linking organisations and artists (subject to conditions).

The workshop will be facilitated by experienced trainers: Jane Beston has a professional background in mental health and developmental group work, and Nadia Fall in theatre & creative arts.

Subtext has a proven history of successfully delivering creative workshops in the health arena. Subtext works specifically with hard to reach communities, including young people and those with mental health difficulties. Subtext believes in giving these groups a voice, providing a platform for new ideas & supporting creativity. We are passionate about creating opportunities and enabling the development of new skills.
