Writing workshops at the Royal London Hospital

July 2004

In partnership with Vital Arts at the Royal London Hospital, we ran a series of writing workshops for staff at all levels within the hospital. Writer and experienced teacher, Jacob Ross took the participants through a series of writing exercises and discussion sessions. The workshops ended with an informal evening event where participants discussed their experiences and shared some of their work.

I have always had an interest in writing, but like most people I imagine, I doubted that my work would be good enough to be aired. From the outset of the creative writing course we were facilitated in tapping into our skills and I thoroughly enjoyed the process of seeing and discussing my work.

I have worked for Barts and The London NHS Trust for thirteen years and am now on the brink of retirement. I have always been able to amuse the children in the family by telling them stories, the ideas and words come easy and yet when it came to putting pen to paper I didn’t know where to start.

As a member of the Vital Arts Club the opportunity came to give it a try, I joined the Creative Writing course. Our tutor Jacob Ross was an author himself. He taught us how to construct a story, how to begin and just as important how to end it, the exercises he gave us were really great fun and to all of us in the class, he showed us a talent we never knew we had.
With the encouragement I received from Jacob and others who read my work I am now doing The Writers Bureau course.
