Dividing Lines

Dividing Lines was an innovative project using performance poetry to work with young people in Tower Hamlets and Hackney to explore positive and creative responses to conflict situations. The project was led by Subtext. Throughout November, dynamic spoken word artists, Breis and Joelle Taylor, worked with seventy 13-14 year olds from George Green’s School, Hackney Free School, Central Foundation for Girls School and Morpeth School, examining current issues such as knife crime, gangs and territorial conflict, the roots of prejudice and how it can lead to conflict. The young people also worked with experienced youth worker and mediator, Raj Bhari. They developed original performance pieces which were performed to an invited audience of young people and interested adults at the Brady Centre in Whitechapel in December 2006.
